A 24-HOUR UX DESIGN CHALLENGE

Valendar

Create a unique application designed specifically for Valentina; a traveling salesperson who frequently travels internationally for work.

The Design Scenario

Valentina leads sales and business development for a Fortune 500 company. She travels 3 out of 4 weeks in the month, and when she travels, it’s almost always internationally. Between all her travel to different timezones and a busy meeting schedule in different cities, she finds it challenging to keep up with her calendar to show up to the right places at the right time.

Design a calendar flow and interface that is smart enough to suggest meeting times, accounts for changing time zones, and is proactively working for Valentina to make sure she is always on time for her meetings.

Challenge Constraints

Frequent Int'l Travel

Valentina travels to different time zones frequently, making time zone management critical.

Time Zones

App should automatically adjust for time zone differences to ensure accurate meeting times.

Proactive Reminders

The app needs to send reminders and alerts to prevent missing meetings or events.

Simple User Interface

The interface should be intuitive, making it easy to view and manage her schedule without confusion.

Travel-Related Info

The app should provide travel-related details, such as flight times, meeting locations, and local transportation.

No Double-Bookings

The system should help prevent meeting overlaps despite her varied schedule in multiple time zones.

Early Ideas & Concept Designs

I began by outlining all known constraints, developing a clear problem statement, and worked through a brainstorming session to generate ideas.

Low Fidelity User Flows

During the early stages of my design planning, I developed two, low fidelity mock user flows with the intention of refining them both into high-fidelity designs using my finalized design style.

The first user flow illustrates Valentina manually adding a new meeting to her schedule, while the second showcases her experience when receiving a critical travel alert notification.

Rapid Ideation Wireframing

Building on my initial design concepts, I pushed myself with a quick, creative design exercise: sketching wireframe ideas in 60-second intervals to encourage out-of-the-box thinking without getting caught up in details. Normally, I transition from multiple hand-drawn wireframes to low-fidelity digital designs in tools like Sketch or Figma to establish a layout. However, due to the time constraints of this exercise, I went directly into creating high-fidelity mockups.

Reflection

Although this design challenge was based on a fictional scenario and user, I thoroughly enjoyed tackling the problem and taking the opportunity to design a high-fidelity app from the ground up. This process allowed me to sharpen my skills in user design, ideation, and prototyping, culminating in a polished product.
